“Should I have Botox or dermal fillers?” and “Which is better, Botox or fillers?” are questions we are regularly asked but there is no straight answer. These two injectables have different effects and fulfil different functions in aesthetics. Botox relaxes muscles to stop wrinkles forming or remove wrinkles created when muscles repeatedly contract. Dermal fillers add plumpness to the skin and can be used to fill hollow areas, wrinkles and to create certain effects. That’s why it is impossible call one better than the other and which we recommend to our clients depends entirely on what they want.
Both Botox and fillers can be used to make people look younger but they’re used in different areas and for slightly different problems. Botox isn’t effective at treating deep wrinkles and can’t be used to plump thinned lips or help with dark circles (tear troughs) under the eyes or help to fill out hollowed cheeks but fillers are perfectly suited to do these things. Botox is effective, however, to treat fine lines on the forehead and around the eyes.
One Helps the Other
Even though they fulfil different functions, Botox can be used to make fillers last longer. Both these injectables will wear off over time but fillers disperse more quickly if the part they are injected into moves and flexes. That’s why it can sometimes be a good idea to treat deep wrinkles with Botox and fillers to get the best long lasting result. We also sometimes combine their use to treat a certain area, like the forehead, if it has both fine and deep wrinkles.
A Complete Rejuvenation
Just as we can get the best result in a single area by using both Botox and fillers, we can create really striking effects on the whole face by carefully applying Botox to some issues and fillers to others. For people who want to rejuvenate their whole face, we can use Botox on the fine lines and fillers on the deep wrinkles all over the face. We can also give people more prominent cheekbones or make hollowed cheeks look fuller using fillers. They also work to reduce dark cycles under the eyes by filling out tear troughs and get rid of wrinkles around the lips by making the lips fuller. Applying all these techniques together can give the face a dramatically younger and fresher look.
